"Aloha!"

Dear Blog Friends,

So the moms are off to Hawaii ... which must be far away because they took a WHOLE lot of stuff with them ... here's a picture of the packing-in-progress ... which took awhile because someone was glued to "All Paris Hilton All The Time" the day they left ...

The very first thing they did when they got there, evidently, was hop in the car and find the place with the Mai Tais ...

And then I'm not sure about why this was worth a picture but Mom says it's something called "Pope On A Rope" and it was in the bathroom where they're staying and it's a collector's item and I should trust them on that ... whatever!

Then they took a drive around the island ... here's our mom posing on her birthday ... (she said to tell everybody thanks for all the nice emails but she's not going to be blogging til she gets back. "Yeah, right!" we said. We'll see!)

They found a great place to stop for shrimp for lunch on the North Shore ...

And then just headed back to Honolulu checking out all the cool scenery ...

Bidding a fond farewell to their first day on their Island Adventure as they headed home to rest up for Happy Hour at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

Meanwhile, WE'RE at Doggie Day Care. They better bring presents!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY ...

... to the best mom on the whole Animal Planet!

This is for our Mom Louise because Mother's Day shouldn't just be for the moms who have human kids who send cards and emails and flowers but for the moms of us animal kids who can't do any of that stuff but want their mom to know that WE know that we're the luckiest kids of all!!

From Harvey: With love and thanks for hanging in there with me even when I'm "high maintenance" and for giving me the gift of LOTS great dog park days in my dotage and for not counting the occasional anxiety attack against me!

From Luna: For telling me I'm the cutest pea in the pod and for letting me sleep on the couch even though it's against your principles and none of your OTHER dogs ever got away with behavior like that!

From Walden: With love and gratitude for not giving up on me when I was AWOL last year for a month and for not freaking out like Susan does when I bring home parts of things-formerly-alive and for giving me such a comfly place to nap.

And from Birdie & Baby: For keeping us safe and fed and warm and for yelling at Luna every single time she chases us (and that's ALOT) and for giving us baskets to snuggle and curl up in and for being ....

... the BEST MOM EVER!
.
WE LOVE YOU!!

Paris Hilton Got 45 Days for Violating HER Probation ...

I'm not sure yet how much time they're going to make me serve ...

It started out so well ... a new chaise lounge on the patio that is almost as comfy as the couch in the living room ... so of course I staked it out for myself. Ah, the good life! And then ...

I wish I had a good excuse but I just don't. There weren't any cats around to chase or I'd run out of rawhide bones or Harvey wouldn't play with me ... I can't really remember what ... but one minute I was lounging on the cushion and the next ...

... well, it was a shadow of its former self. And "Sorry, I was bored," caught me as much slack with my moms as Paris Hilton's "Sorry, I don't read my mail," got from the judge who sentenced her.

I wonder what "indeterminate sentence" means?

Harvey: Rainy Days and Fridays ...

So it's a rainy day and since the moms can't be outside repotting plants (which was supposed to be the plan for this particular day off) they're stuck inside with two dogs and three cats and time on their hands ... which led to one of them noticing what they decided was an uncanny resemblence between ...

Sally Field as:
THE FLYING NUN

&

.
Harvey Brooks as:
THE FLYING FIDO

All Babies All the Time

Our moms were both home all day today -- that's kind of unusual in itself -- but they were also doing unusual things ... moving boxes and stuff out in their library/office. We knew they were serious when the CHRISTMAS boxes that have been sitting around for months finally migrated back up to the attic.

Turns out it's all about getting cleaned up for Jamie to come home on leave from the army ... our mom Susan wrote about that on her blog earlier today ... you can check that out here.

But -- as seems to happen alot around here -- the moms got distracted. Moving boxes around they found boxes of old pictures and then the cleaning stopped and the ooing and ahhing started. So just for fun we thought we'd share a few of the baby pictures they dug out ...

First of all were these totally cute pictures of Harvey:
Who ever imagined this little bitty guy ...

...with such big ears and gangly legs
would grow up into the stately hound he became?
(Not our mom Louise -- who thought
he was going to be "a medium size dog.")

And then there's me ... here's what I looked like
on the very first day they brought me home from Husky Camp.
Hard to believe?????
You haven't seen ANYTHING yet ...

Look what ELSE they found ....
.... this is our mom Susan
with her dog Admiral
about a bazillion years ago.
(Well, a really long time ago ... nobody's exactly talking!)
.

And here's our mom Louise ... what a cutie patootie ...
(circa Nineteen-Never-Mind)

... and the final entry in our "all babies, all the time" blog ...

... this great picture of a litter of puppies that belonged to
our Uncle Jud a really long time ago but our mom
held onto because it was so cute!

All together now:

AWWWW!!!!!!

EASTER MONDAY

Getting ready for Easter Sunday meant our moms were are church even MORE than usual ... hard to imagine, we know... but true! But things were looking pretty good over there on Easter Sunday and after having twenty-four services between Palm Sunday morning and Easter afternoon ...

... and after finishing up the last service on Easter Day ...

... and after saying "Happy Easter!" to about a bazillion people ...

... they finally came home to pay some attention to US! That's the good part. The "other" part is that for some reason known only to our moms whenever a holiday rolls around they succumb to the temptation to make us look "cute" which makes us feel STUPID ...
.
... Harvey would be "Easter Exhibit A":
.
(I just figure if I close my eyes it will be over soon.)

And then there's me ... I mean, honestly: aren't my actual ears big enough?

But wait a minute ... what's this?????????

It rolls around but it sure smells like there's something to eat in there ...

Can you open it for me ... please? Pretty please, please, please, please!!!

OK, OK ... it's a deal ... but just this once. Take the picture ... QUICK!

(The things I'll do for a Milk Bone!)
.
HAPPY EASTER, EVERYBODY!

Luna: On Lenten Discipline

So I wasn't exactly looking for trouble today, but it was kind of boring and I was out of chew bones and there was this booklet thing on the low coffee table in the living room so I took it out on the patio ...
.
and shredded it up. Not as much fun as a chew bone ... or those Cole Haan loafers I got a couple of weeks ago but, hey ... I'm still a puppy and a puppy's gonna do what a puppy's gonna do.

So I'm still not sure what a Lenten discipline is ....

.... but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get some
of the REGULAR discipline that goes on around here
when things like this happen!

Luna: A Totally GREAT Dog Park Day

We ALWAYS like going to the dog park ... it's our favorite thing to do ...
.
My ALMOST favorite part is being 'THE LEADER OF THE PACK' ... (this is me ... out in front of the field ... closing for home!)

But my REALLY favorite part is Kelly.

She's our favorite dog park person and when she's there I say the heck with the DOGS I want to hang out with the PEOPLE ...

So I just worm my way past all those other less-interesting-fabulous-and-adorable dogs and ...

Well ... the rest is history. (It doesn't get much better than this!!!)

OK ... I'm good ... let's go now.

Time for my beauty sleep. (Sorry, Harve ... to the victor belongs the chair!)

Luna: This isn't what it looks like ...

I know this looks kind of bad but honest, I wasn't about to try to rifle my mom's purse in hopes of finding something edible -- heck, I'd have just chewed on the PURSE if I'd been feeling hungry! I just don't know how long it's going to take them to figure out that I've claimed that particular spot on the couch as MINE ... and anything in the way is fair game.
.
I know, I know, "Luna -- OFF!" they tell me. Yeah, right -- whatever. I can't for the life of me figure out why THEY can't "do the math" that says a dog on the couch is worth two chasing the cats! Call me spoiled -- and they do -- but if I'm happy they're happier ... and so are the cats!

Harvey & Luna: EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!

Our dog park was in the newspaper! How cool is that? It was even a day that we were THERE because my mom remembers seeing the photographer there. She said if she'd realized it was for a newspaper story she'd have made sure we got into the picture. (It pays to have a media savvy mom!) Anyway, we didn't make it into the story but our friend Lucy did ... she's in the video they had online at the Star-News ... check it out:

And read the article online ... or below!

Canine park a hot spot for pets, social gathering
By Janette Williams,

[Janette Williams: PASADENA] - Fun-seekers spill out of a white stretch limo at one of the hottest spots in town. This crowd is ready to rock - and to roll in the dirt.

Ginger the Great Dane, Oliver the mutt and other Doggie Nannies service regulars arrive in style with their handler, David Shelton. But once through the gates they blend into the social scene at Vina Vieja, the city's first off-leash dog park.

Since it opened last April, the 2.5-acre park in Northeast Pasadena has become a big draw for dogs and owners area-wide. Labradoodles, schneagles, puggles, Chiweenies, purebreds and mixes so exotic no one's coined a name meet and greet in a universal doggy language. Owners socialize throughout the day: moms after they have dropped kids off at school, retirees, the Thursday schnauzer group and the after-work or weekend crowd reputed to create a party atmosphere. And there are rumors of the odd flirtation.

"You mean the dogs or the people?" joked Ron Rosemont, who comes almost every day from Monrovia with his blind miniature poodle, Basso Profundo - "half poodle, half pot-bellied pig, who thinks he's the mayor of the park" - and Reggie Bush, the standard poodle who looks out for him.

"Some people don't pay attention to their dogs; they come here to see each other," Rosemont said, smiling. "People looking for romance are not responsible dog owners."

The park is one way of meeting people with common interests, said Carolyn Keeber, who regularly brings her yellow Lab, Charlie. "I have a boyfriend, but if you're single it's probably a good place to meet casually and talk to people."

It may not have been part of the dog-park plan, but "I've certainly seen some gentle flirtation," said Lisa Mrozek, vice president of POOCH (Pasadenans Organizing Off-leash Canine Habitat), the volunteer group that lobbied the city for a decade to establish the area. Mrozek said the group has been "absolutely thrilled" with the response. "I like to think it's one of the most-used parks," she said. There's no official tally of numbers, she said, but the park is so well-used that the volunteer group plans to have the area re-sodded, in two stages. Mostly things go smoothly at the park, regulars say, but the odd dog fight does break out, much of it posturing, and owners are quick to intervene.

"If there's a bad dog or a bad owner people politely gang up on them," Rosemont said. "There's an internal police force that's gentle but effective."

But, as POOCH volunteers point out when asking for feedback via their Web site: "Police, we're not. And we're as frustrated as you are with some of the unpleasant parts of the dog park: aggressive dogs, smelly trash receptacles, standing water, soggy sod, ill dogs, and inconsiderate owners."

Talking of which, picking up after dogs is a task not everyone performs, the Web site notes: "One person, a Pasadena city councilman, no less, brought his two big white dogs and immediately plunked down on a bench in the far northwest corner of the park. He was busy reading a newspaper and had to be told that two pounds of poop was available for pickup at the other side of the park."

"I don't recall that incident," said Councilman Paul Little, owner of two 115-pound Great Pyrenees named Andy and Amy. "People tend to be very polite, and understand everyone misses the opportunity to do their cleanup duties once in a while."

Harvey's Top Ten New Year's Resolutions

#1 -- NO MORE PARTY HATS! I mean, honestly -- I'm a dignified guy and just LOOK at me here!

#2 -- STEP AWAY FROM THE TRASH CAN. You'd think getting my head stuck in it a few weeks ago and suffering public humiliation on this blog would do the trick, but no ..........!!! At the Christmas Open House our friend Ramona caught me dead to rights trying to get tamale wrappings out and I was busted all over again. Maybe there's a chapter of "TA" (trashcans anonymous) I could check out!

#3 -- THE MAIL CARRIER IS YOUR FRIEND. I'm not sure what gets me going about her ... the hat, the bag ... maybe it's her boots ... but my mom says she's the one who brings us packages and catalogues and that I should BACK OFF ... so I'm going to try.

Which brings me to ...

#4 -- THE METER READER. Now that one REALLY makes me nuts and there really isn't any help for it -- so I'm hoping one of the moms will resolve to make sure I'm inside when she comes around in the future so I don't embarrass us all (again.)

#5 -- HUMPING IS AS HUMPING DOES. Our trainer, Lundi, explained that the reason old dogs like me hump young dogs like Luna's hyper friends at the dog park is that we're smarter and calmer and want THEM to calm down and behave so we hump them to dominate them and get them back in line. Great theory -- doesn't work. All it does is get me yelled at and I get enough of that from my other issues. Like ...

#6 -- QUIT MIXING UP THE WATER BOWL WITH THE TOILET BOWL. I don't know why it matters so much to the moms where we get water when we're thirsty but if they've said it once they've said it a hundred times: GET OUT OF THAT TOILET, HARVEY! So I'm going to work on it ... honest. (And they could help on this one by leaving the stupid lid down!)

#7 -- GIVE UP THE HYSTERICAL BARKING. It's not like it does anybody any good ... it just annoys the neighbors and gets my blood pressure up and doesn't make the moms come home a minute sooner from wherever it is they go when they leave me here to "guard the house." I'm gonna try on this one, but no promises.

#8 -- WHEN THEY SAY SWALLOW, SWALLOW. Spitting out the pills might feel like a momentary victory but in the long run they actually make me feel calmer and less frantic so I'm going to turn 2007 into "Better Living Through Chemistry" year and just go with the flow.

#9 -- BE MORE PATIENT WITH LUNA. She isn't a BAD dog, she's just a wild one ... and she doesn't mean to hurt me when she pulls my tail, yanks on my privates and chews on that saggy skin between my ear and my collar ... she just gets kind of full of herself and wants to play, play, play. And at the ripe old age of thirteen to her just-turned-one I'm going to have to be the more patient one. Either that or bite her back.

#10 -- COUNT MY BLESSINGS. Considering that last year at this time they were talking Dog Heaven like it was on my calendar sooner rather than later, I'm pretty darned lucky to still be hanging out at the dog park and snagging treats on a regular basis. Thirteen is positively ancient for a big old coot like me and my moms do their best to keep me active and happy and Luna is actually a great addition to our family ... Lord knows she's raised my activity level ... which more than balances out the occasionally raised blood pressure I'm sure!

So Happy New Year, everybody. Those are my resolutions ... what are yours???????

A year ago today ...

... my mom drove up to Husky Camp and picked me out from my litter of siblings and I looked like this:
.

She said she picked me because I was the cutest and the best. My other mom was in Kentucky visiting my brother Brian and so she had to just see me in a cell phone picture to start with ... but what really matters is they picked me out of all the others and now here we are ... a year later ... living happily ever after.

Except for those Cole Haan loafters.

And YESTERDAY when we were at the Dog Park there were SIX OTHER DOGS there who had come from Husky Camp ... two from one family and four from another. We wished we'd had a camera with us so we could have gotten a picture ... "Husky Camp South" my mom said it looked like ... and we had a great time running and chasing.

So Happy Anniversary to me ... and to my moms for picking me out and for putting up with me. I'm a pretty darned lucky puppy!
